CHAELA – “Stay Too Long” Review

After a five-year break from releasing solo material, Eastbourne singer-songwriter Chaela returns with “Stay Too Long”, a polished slice of dance-pop that feels tailor-made for late-night drives, radio playlists and anyone who’s ever kept giving chances to someone who didn’t deserve them.

Released to coincide with both her return to music and her 30th birthday, the track marks a new chapter for the artist, and it’s a pretty confident way to kick things off.

Opening with a swelling synth that gradually fades into view, the song wastes little time getting moving. Chaela’s warm and inviting vocal arrives before the beat fully drops, allowing the track to build anticipation through electronic textures and rising percussion. When the chorus lands, we’re treated to a groove-led blend of dance-pop and contemporary electronic production that instantly feels familiar in all the right ways.

Drawing influence from artists such as Dua Lipa, Billie Eilish and Ariana Grande, there’s a modern pop sheen throughout, but the song retains enough personality to avoid feeling like a carbon copy of current chart trends. The production is clean, vibrant and full of subtle electronic flourishes that keep things ticking along nicely across its concise 2-minute, 52-second runtime.

Lyrically, “Stay Too Long” tackles the all-too-relatable experience of holding on to someone despite repeated disappointment and broken trust. It’s a theme many listeners will connect with, and while the subject matter carries emotional weight, the upbeat production ensures the track never becomes heavy or self-indulgent.

One of the more interesting aspects of the track is its blend of dancefloor energy and pop accessibility. There were even moments that faintly brought Shakira to mind, albeit filtered through a more contemporary electronic production style. The melodies are undeniably catchy, and it’s easy to imagine this one finding a home on radio playlists thanks to its infectious chorus and polished delivery.

Towards the final section, a male backing vocal enters the mix, adding depth and a welcome lower octave beneath Chaela’s lead performance. It’s a small touch, but one that helps the closing moments feel bigger before the track gradually fades away on its final chord.

If there’s one minor criticism, it’s that some of the vocals occasionally sit slightly behind the production, making certain lyrical moments a touch difficult to pick out. However, this does little to detract from the song’s overall appeal and may simply come down to personal listening preferences.

What remains undeniable is that “Stay Too Long” is catchy, radio-friendly and confidently produced. More importantly, it successfully reintroduces Chaela as an artist with a clear direction and a strong understanding of modern pop songwriting.

Five years is a long time away, but judging by this release, Chaela hasn’t missed a step.
